Remember to clean your sidewalks
the staff of the Ridgewood blog
(RIDGEWOOD-NJ) A simple reminder that Ridgewood residents could face fines if they fail to shovel their sidewalks. The light powdery snow should have been no problem to shovel .
The Ridgewood blog will now publish photos of neighbors who fail to clean their walkways and Chief Ward will be sent a list of reported offenders . This also goes for businesses ,churches and state as well as municipal property .

I think this is a great idea. Whenever I called the central dispatch to report a sidewalk thats needs shovelling, I got the impression that it was 'too much effort' on their part to take down the information and pass it along for enforcement.
For those not familiar with this blog, what email address shall the pictures and address be sent to?
Thanks again for doing the job the Village doesn't!
All on the Blog complain about big brother, now we have the big brother blog! Love it!
Wyckoff fines people $500
Big Brother Blog. Its more like a public service announcement. PJ it must be Bombose writing again. He should stick to his "Pot Shot One Way Blog."
Talk about Big Brother Blogs. Bombase's blog you have to log in so he knows your name. He must be BIG BROTHER.
for years I thought the Indian from the Village people ran that blog , they seem a bit obsessed with PJ in an unnatural manner
I guess we know which of the responders doesn't clear their sidewalks.
Make sure to get a picture of the house on the SE corner of Ridgewood Ave and Pleasant. Somerville kids/parents have falling down on that snow covered sidewalk for a decade. At least one broken arm that I know of. Dr. Brown used to phone it in to the PD but I think they just pay their fines and thumb their noses at everyone.
I had a neighbor who for years would just pay the fines and still not shovel his sidewalk. He made it clear to us that the snow would be off his sidewalk when it melted and that was it. As luck would have it no one ever fell and sued him. We were all glad when his kids put him in a home and sold the house.
your neighbor must have been a rude lazy, asshole
yes even in Brooklyn you have to shovel your sidewalk
Why do the residents have to 'play cop'? Is it too much effort for the RPD to open their eyes and write the tickets?
It's far too risky for the cops to get out of their cars. Remember that incident a couple of years ago when both cops got out of their car and slipped, and had to be airlifted to Valley?
I live on a corner and have 250 feet of sidewalk to shovel. For over 20 years, I never missed a storm, even shoveled through the mountain of ice the plow created on the corner so the kids walking to school could get to the sidewalk and I do my neighbor's sidewalk as well since her spouse passed on.
Then the town must have changed plowers, because they started plowing the entire street onto my side. When there is a lot of snow, it is impossible to move. And even when I move it, when the plow comes for a second pass, they once again cover my side of the street only, creating a mountain of snow, slush and ice from the street on my sidewalk that is impossible to move. I've tried reporting this to the town with no results. The same thing happens to my neighbor whose sidewalk I shovel.
So not every situation is as it appears. Maybe you should give up fostering this mob mentality and look at this on a case by case basis. All this energy could be better spent than fostering anger between neighbors that is sometimes misplaced due to ignorance. Before you report and photograph, be responsible. At least find out what the situation is. Try to be civilized.
1252...and the sob stories start
It is about time. yes in the old days you would have been asked to move if you didn't know how to behave.
I see it all over town a well cleaned driveway and a side walk never touched ,just a bunch of rude bastards
12:53, exactly what sob story are you talking about? I've been clearing 250 feet of side walk plus for almost thirty years now. NEVER missed a storm. What have you been doing? Obviously not reading because you completely missed the point of my post. But you did illustrate my concerns about ignorant mob mentality among neighbors to perfection!
it was a lite powder yesterday on a Saturday ,the only reason people didn't shovel their sidewalks is because they are selfish and bad neighbors
Once again...ignorance at it's finest. Some people are just angry and unhappy and looking for a target for their own misery.
This snow, shoveled or unshoveled, will be a memory by Monday.
So have you been shoveling 250 ft. for 20 years or 30 years??? Make up you mind!!!!
Well, 1:39, let me try to make this easier for you since your reading comprehension skills seem to be compromised.
For the first twenty or so years that I've lived here on my corner property, I had no problem with how my side street was plowed and I shoveled my sidewalks every time it snowed.
Then, the plowers started pushing all of the snow and ice to my side of the street, creating a problem. I have notified the town who promised to look into it, but so far no results.
In spite of that, I have continued to shovel my sidewalk and my neighbor's for that past several years since that problem began. I haven't missed a storm in the almost thirty years total that I've lived here.
I hope this clarifies everything for you. And good luck with those reading comprehension issues. I hope one day you are able to rise above them.
2:09 maybe more time shoveling snow and less time shoveling the bull
Judging by your response times, I know you're just sitting there waiting for this 2:11. Don't you have anything else going for you?
Not that your silly remark deserves a response, but those of us that are responsible shoveled our sidewalks yesterday. You remember yesterday don't you...when it snowed?
2:11, read this slowly and try to understand; I'm not part of this problem. I shovel my snow. If you want however, to make some progress with YOUR problem, a visit with Evelyn Wood is in order.
Have a great day!
PS: I know you will need to get the last word in so go ahead, but don't sit there pathetically waiting for my response. I've got a few other things to do today. I'll probably check back later though if that's any comfort.
12:29 Wasn't that was a Fireman.
This blog article is ignorance in its finest form. There are many reasons a property owner does not timely shovel the walk. Be more productive instead of Big Brother. For example, instead of taking a photo - send a kid to do it. Maybe the property owner will be thrilled and compensate. My kids went out and made money, I'm sure others could too - even in the snob haven of Richwood.
no surprise the lazy excuse makers are out in number , get off your lazy ass and shovel you sidewalks at $500 a pop the Village could pick up some needed cash flow maybe even hire some more workers
I agree with the previous post. I The easiest thing for a plow to do is build a mountain at the corner. I shovel my sidewalk but the plow operator should be required to move the mountain that he creates with his truck. I will shovel what nature puts down but it is not my job to clean up after the lazy plow operators.
8:29, you need a hobby. Oh yeah, you already have two, complaining and name calling. Now if you would only shovel your sidewalks like the rest of the fine folks posting here, you could have three!
We have a neighbor who cleans all our sidewalks off. He's like the energizer bunny with that snowblower of his. He loves to help his neighbors. I have my shovel in hand but he's already done my sidewalk and the entire block. We all love him! And when he wasn't well last year, we all bailed him out for once. It was nice to return the favor. He's the best neighbor ever!
If plow trucks simply slowed down they wouldn't cast heavy snow and ice onto our sidewalks.
We have a neighbor like that on my block 6:36. Until I bought my snow blower, he would come by with his snow blower and do my sidewalk. When my next door neighbor is out of town during a storm, I take care of her driveway for her. Since I purchased my snow blower, I help spread the good will and pay it forward by doing another neighbor's walk and driveway who has suffered some hardship in recent years. It's great to be a good neighbor and it's great to have good neighbors. You can't really have one without the other and sometimes it's necessary to give someone the benefit of the doubt to enjoy these relationships.
It sounds like people like 8:29, 1:18, 12:58, 12:53, etc. (probably the same person) will never know what that's like. All he/she/they want is to live in bitterness and make a buck off their neighbors. I feel sorry for anyone who has to live next to someone like that.
It's nice to be nice! Sounds like you're the best neighbor ever, too, 10:11!
Thanks 1:33, I'm just one part of a very nice block. We're all good to each other in different ways. I'm lucky.
I agree with the posters above. The corner lot problem is a big issue. The snowplows don't just undo my shoveling, they pile a moutain of snow, especially right on the corner (where most people want to cross). I have about 300 linear feet. Don't mind shoveling it once or even twice, but the plow pushes it back faster than I can shovel.
Bud give the Village Hall a call ,tell your trying do the right thing but you keep getting dumped on
11:51, FYI, many properties in Brooklyn are now valued much higher than Ridgewood properties, so enough with the elitist attitude.
I called Village Hall about the plow issue a few times last year and in prior years. They were very nice and sympathetic and promised to do something about it, but in the end there have been no improvements. From what I'm reading here, I'm not the only one.
404 yes and in Brooklyn you have to shovel your side walk
430 its a new regime try again talk to the mayor
8:16 you are a tool. There are no excuses for lazy inconsiderate property owners to ignore the law and not shovel the sidewalks.
I'm sure you would change your attitude if your kid slipped and fell or you landed on your fat lazy ass.
I don't like the idea of posting pictures. You never know the real story. Maybe the person is sick or just had a family tragedy or a baby. Could backfire. Big Brother is right--shades of "1984."
Boo hoo 9:16, all alone and so so bitter. Go cry in the corner.
P.S. You'd probably love it "if your kid slipped and fell" on somebody's sidewalk (if you had a kid) or if "you landed on your fat lazy ass" (that, you probably have). Yet another way to make a buck off your neighbor.
I do many walks here for elderly neighbors as well as our own. Have done so for years. I've never taken a dime and would never do so.
Unfortunately, being nice is not w/o its problems. The walks are old and many slabs are uprooted by trees. After last year, had to spend over $300 on repairs to my little 4HP blower caused by hitting all the bumps on other people's walks. I know well where the few on our property are and avoid them.
Got a "big momma" blower now too (used). And with the snow the other day, once again tried being the good neighbor. But I didn't know one neighbor had a full newspaper buried in the snow on their walk.
Of course, that went in the blower and jammed its impeller severely. Spent all day Sunday taking it apart and getting several hundred pages heavily compacted outta there in order to make machine usable for next time. (amazing what 9HP can do to a big newspaper, the stuff was nearly welded in and it was seized up)
I had lots of better things to do than be amateur mechanic, but no real choice.
I'm now considering no longer doing neighbors' walks - sorry to say.
While I like enforcing clearing walks, it does need to be "tempered" by the fact that some elderly folks use landscapers to do their snow - and they do not always show up when they say they will. I know several people in that situation, because I've removed their snow too at times when their contractor never showed up.
But anyhow, after being out over $300 and also a full day of my time for "mechanic" labor, plus all the time I spend actually blowing the snow, I have to rethink how good a neighbor I can afford to be!
9:50, I know all about the newspaper in the snow blower issue. Your neighbors can request that their news carrier leave their paper by the door. That's what I did. And your neighbors should fix their sidewalks (did that too) because even if the village hasn't asked them to (they typically only come around when a complaint has been made in the vicinity) they should do it because they are liable if someone trips and hurts themselves and perhaps if someone damages their snow removal equipment. Either would be more expensive than fixing the sidewalk. You sound like a nice person. Don't give up on them, help them.
