NEWTON, NJ , July 5, 2011 -Rep. Scott Garrett (NJ-05) participated in the annual flag raising ceremony in Ridgewood on Monday prior to the start of Ridgewood’s Independence Day celebration. Garrett was joined by former Marine Jesse Canella, an Iraq war veteran and Ridgewood native, who has co-founded HonorVet.org, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to connect returning veterans to a wide array of services dedicated to enhancing their overall well-being, including mental health counseling and job-hunting resources..

July 07, 2011 -Senator Kevin O’Toole is happy to announce that local school districts will receive increased school aid for the 2011-2012 school year.

Senator O’Toole worked closely with the Christie Administration in an effort to gain a fairer share of school aid dollars in the final state budget signed by the Governor.

“School children and property taxpayers are the primary beneficiaries of the Governor’s decision to dedicate additional state revenue to school aid for suburban communities,” said Senator O’Toole “I’m pleased that Governor Christie worked with us over the past several months to dedicate additional state revenues to school aid for suburban communities. By making tough choices and using an unexpected bump in state revenues wisely, we were able not only to increase aid over last year, but to double the rate of increase that was originally proposed in March.”

What a shocker. Ridgewood BOE and Fishbein misrepresented the delivery of state grants in order to push through their pet projects and get the town to vote on the yes on the bond.

I even seem to remember Fishbein and Lenhard guaranteeing that the grants would not be held up in spite of the economic uncertainty of the state.

IT IS TIME TO FIRE FISHBEIN and vote no-confidence in Lenhard & Brogan and get them out of there. I would rather have the state takeover the school system that let these useless fools continue to run our school system into the poor house and put a drain on the taxpayers in the community.

Just to be note, I am not against spending money to ensure the future success of our children. However, money needs to be spent wisely and have a strong and provable return on investment. Turf fields that need replacement and continuous maintenance (b/c they were idiotically built in a flood zone) does not represent wise spending. The return on investment does come close to breaking even as not nearly enough of the student population benefits.

John Cook — The White House released its annual salary report last week, and as usual, it's nice to work for Barack Obama: Most staffers who were there for more than a year got a salary bump. A bigger one than you did.

The last time we checked in on White House salaries, we found that an astonishing 75% of continuing staffers got raises from 2009 to 2010—a huge number given the fact that, according to compensation experts, most companies had skipped routine raises that year in reaction to the economic crisis that the White House was busy failing to solve. This time around—from 2010 to 2011—the ratio is a little less dramatic. Of the 270 White House staffers who have been there for more than a year, 146—or 54%—received raises. The average salary increase was 8%. If you look at only staffers who got raises, the average increase was twice that.

At a reorganization meeting Tuesday night, Charles Nalbantian was appointed chairman of the Ridgewood Planning Board for a four-year term, with Albert Pucciarelli remaining as vice chairman.

Nalbantian, a management consultant who has served on the board since 2007, will replace David Nicholson, a long-time board member who stepped down last month.

The New Jersey Supreme Court denied an appeal Wednesday that could have derailed Hackensack University Medical Center’s plans to re-open Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood as a 128-bed community hospital, officials said.

The court’s decision not to hear the appeal — effectively upholding a lower court’s earlier denial — means that the last remaining legal hurdle has been removed for HUMC to apply for state approval for the hospital, said Robert C. Garrett, the medical center’ s president.

American Petroleum Institute CEO Jack Gerard tells Newsmax that easing the Obama administration’s restrictions on drilling for oil and gas could create more than half a million new America jobs.

He also states that a long-delayed pipeline from Canada can help the United States and its northern neighbor provide 92 percent of America’s domestic fuel needs within two decades.

But Gerard warns that the Obama administration’s “fundamentally wrong” energy policies are having a “very significant adverse impact on our energy policy” and charges that attacks on the oil industry by Democrats are “punitive” and “vindictive.”

The High Price of Obama’s Fake Jobs Scheme

Sometimes magic tricks just aren’t that great, and even the most innocent, wide-eyed child can’t be fooled by the illusionist’s flourish. Such is the case with the rabbit the White House is trying to pull out of its magic hat by claiming that President Barack Obama’s stimulus has created or saved 2.4 million jobs at a cost of $666 billion, all while the United States continues to suffer 9.1 percent unemployment. If you do the math, that comes out to around $278,000 per job.

That information comes from a White House Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) report released last Friday that desperately tries to maintain the illusion that Obama’s stimulus has saved the day for struggling Americans.

If you take the CEA at its word, you might be a bit confused. Two quarters ago, it claimed that the stimulus added or saved just under 2.7 million jobs. That’s 288,000 more jobs than it claims the stimulus has created or saved today. (The Congressional Budget Office has downgraded its claim of the stimulus’ “success,” too.) Compare that to the President’s promise to create 3.5 million jobs by 2010—the economy, instead, lost millions of jobs, leaving Obama 7.3 million jobs short of his goal.

This was not only a great float, it was a courageous statement as well. I was proud of the kids and their teachers, which was just as well, because I had been ashamed, a couple of parade units earlier, to watch a crowd of Tea Parties cavort past.

Unless the state of New Jersey sends overdue grant money to Ridgewood post-haste, the school district will have to borrow millions of dollars to avert a cash flow crisis.

The state's Department of Education (DOE) will owe Ridgewood as much as $9.8 million in grant money for construction projects at schools across the district by the time construction is complete; so far, the district has requested about half that amount. Although the district has continued to pay its contractors for the substantial repairs and renovations at eight of the district's 10 schools, which have proceeded on or ahead of schedule, the state has so far delivered none of the money owed.

The issue has been on the radar screen of the Board of Education (BOE) for some months, but as the clock ticks, Ridgewood's coffers continue to deplete - now forcing officials to plan to ask for about $5 million in loans, known as grant anticipation notes, by the end of the year so that the district can continue to operate while continuing its construction projects.

"We can't exactly put out payroll checks and say, 'Don't cash it quite yet,'" said Bob Hutton, BOE vice president and chair of the finance committee.

The Associated Press are sending a team of reporters to Ridgewood to investigate a strange case of pedestrians leaping in front of moving cars.

I wasn't there, I didn't see it, but news reports say the driver was issued a summons for failing to yield to a pedestrian.

I hope the driver fights it in court and shows you are right, that they just couldn't stop their car at an intersection.

There seems to be a rash of Ridgewood citizens who at painted crosswalks or traffic lights leap in front of cars at the last moment. The odd thing is that all the jaywalkers in the middle of streets don't seem to get hit. Ridgewood is a very strange place.

We are pleased to present to you this year's Annual Drinking Water Quality Report, which is designed to inform you about the quality of the water supplied to your premises.  Our goal is to provide you with a safe, continuous, and dependable supply of drinking water.  We are committed to ensuring the quality of your water and routinely monitor and test the water for a host of parameters. The results of some of this monitoring and testing are presented in this report and to you as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Some of the language in this report is prescribed by the NJDEP and much of the information is rather technical. If you have any questions about this report or Ridgewood Water, please contact us at 201-670-5520.  We want our customers to be informed about their water utility. You may also choose to attend the regularly scheduled Village Council meetings at 131 North Maple Avenue.  Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at
8:00 p.m.

Ridgewood Water’s source is primarily groundwater from wells.  We own and operate fifty-one active deep wells which are located throughout the service area in the Borough of Glen Rock, the Borough of Midland Park, the Township of Wyckoff, and the Village of Ridgewood.  We also purchase water from United Water NJ and, during peak summertime demands, water from the Hawthorne Water
Department.

The NJDEP has completed and issued Source Water Assessment Reports and Summaries for Ridgewood Water, the Hawthorne Water Department and United Water NJ, which are available at www.state.nj.us/dep/swap or by contacting NJDEP’s Bureau of Safe
Drinking Water at (609) 292-5550.

Beacon Hill Institute – New Jersey’s Offshore Windmill Project Will Raise Rates, Kill Jobs

Last week, Americans for Prosperity held a special tele-town hall event with Paul Bachmann of the Beacon Hill Institute. Mr. Bachmann joined us for almost an hour to discuss the findings of a cost analysis of the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act and to take questions from the media and AFP activists on the call.

According to the dictates of the Offshore Wind Economic Development Act, New Jersey would be forced to increase the amount of energy sold in the state through offshore wind power. Funding for the project comes in the way of a $100 MILLION taxpayer subsidy.

But according to the report from the Beacon Hill Institute, this plan would hurt New Jersey’s already fragile economy. Here are the key findings from the Beacon Hill Institute’s cost analysis:

The project would produce a net cost of $3.245 billion to New Jersey, within a range of $2.106 billion and $4.137 billion,  New Jersey’s electricity prices will increase by 2.1 percent, in 2017, within a range of 0.5 percent and 4.2 percent; and From 2017 to 2036, the average household ratepayer will pay $431 in higher electricity costs; while the average commercial ratepayer will pay an extra $3,054 and the average industrial ratepayer an extra $109,335. New Jersey will lose an average of 2,219 jobs, within a range of 528 jobs and 4,440 jobs.

These findings are simply devastating. New Jersey ratepayers already pay some of the highest energy costs in the country. And with unemployment in the state hovering near 9.4%, all too many of our fellow residents remain out of work.

Yet, New Jersey is about to embark on a multi-million dollar, untested offshore wind energy scheme that will only drive our electricity bills higher and continue to cost our state jobs.

Our Flag Raising Ceremony was a success because of the efforts of the following people and groups:~ ~ Ridgewood American Legion Post 53, ~ National Anthem sung by Grace Preuninger, ~ Trumpeter – Ridgewood High School Band, Jennifer Schuler,  ~ Guest Speaker – Councilman Stephen Wellinghorst, ~ Congressman Scott Garrett, 5th District of New Jersey and Students representing Ridgewood Elementary Schools who received copies of the United States Constitution.

This year’s parade theme was “Celebrate the Constitution”.  As always, our school floats were outstanding and truly depicted the theme.  It was great to see the RHS Marching Band leading off the parade.

For many years the cost of our tickets remained the same while our costs increased.  This year we have increased our ticket prices.  It was a decision that the Committee did reluctantly in the face of rising costs.  To keep the ticket prices as reasonable as possible for attendees, while covering costs, pre-sales of tickets were made available through our Volunteer Ticket Vendors.  The committee thanks the following businesses:  Backyard Living, Daily Treat Restaurant, Goffle Brook Farm, Harding Wines & Spirits, Herold’s Farm & Garden Center, Hillmann Electric, Hogan’s Restaurant Diner, Hoskins Propane Co. Inc., Lacrosse Unlimited, North Jersey Community Bank, JT's Wine and Spirits, La Strada Delicatessen, Ridgewood Auto Wash,  Ridgewood Cycle Shop, The Wine Seller, Town & Country Apothecary, and the Volunteer members of H.I.L.T.

Our Volunteers for the Day deserve our gratitude.  They help out as Parade Judges, Parade Marshals, Parade Announcer, Banner Carriers and the Evening Gate Attendants.

Our evening entertainment included Illumination Twirlers, Patriot Brass Ensemble, a Welcome by Ridgewood Mayor, Keith Killion, Skydivers the “Fallin’ Angels” Sponsored by Tarvin Realtors, Miss Patti’s School of Dance, The Manhattan Dolls who sang the National Anthem And Fireworks by Fireworks Extravaganza with the Grand Finale Sponsored by Applebee’s.

The Committee thanks Mike Janke for the fireworks flag and Lennie DelDuca for being our stage manager.

The Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration Committee, Inc. is an all-volunteer group of patriotic citizens who coordinate the Ridgewood Fourth of July Flag Raising, Parade, and Fireworks events.  All aspects of the celebration, including the fireworks, parade bands, and evening performers, as well as the necessary police and fire personnel, are funded by the sale of fireworks tickets and the generous contributions made by local business and area residents.
The Committee was formed in 1910 to create a “safe and sane” holiday with an emphasis on Patriotism.  Today we continue that goal and strive to educate the public of the true meaning of Independence Day.

Finding a nurse-midwife in North Jersey — even one who speaks Japanese — is getting a bit easier as more hospitals are welcoming the practitioners to their staffs and into the birthing rooms.

Though they usually must be affiliated with an obstetrician to have hospital privileges, nurse-midwives in growing numbers are seeing patients for prenatal visits, then staying for the duration of the hospital birth.

Englewood resident Amani Elkordyhad no intention of having a midwife when she delivered her son, Nurideen, at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. But she was thrilled with the nurse-midwife who filled in for her obstetrician at the last minute and remained throughout her 20-hour labor.

Back in June the Ridgewood Historical Society hosted its first “Best Burger” Barbecue on  at the Schoolhouse Museum..Five Ridgewood restaurants provided burger samples: The Office, Daily Treat, Park West Tavern, Smith Brothers and MacMurphy's.

The Office served up the winning burger a black pepper crusted burger with a garlic mayo on a brioche bun.

The Judges were Joy Hamburger, cookbook author and Curator of the Schoolhouse Museum; Keith Killion, Mayor of Ridgewood; Deirdre Ward, Social Editor for The Ridgewood News; Joan Groome, Executive Director, Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce; and Drew Nieporent, noted restaurateur and notably the owner of the Tribeca Grill, NOBU and Corton.

So we decided to ask our readers what they think is the best burger in Ridgewood and
our poll came out a little different than the professionals .

Geographically blog readers from Texas,Ohio , Minnesota and New Jersey  all opted for Smith Brothers ,while California ,Iowa , Pennsylvania , Virginia and New York gave the Office their vote.

In our poll Smith Brothers lead all the way ,in the end capturing 26% of the vote . Early on the Park West Tavern made a run for the number one spot but was held off by supporters of Smith Brothers.

They don't have famous names like Navratilova, Sharapova, Federer or Nadal, but these tennis players want to win in straight sets as they match volleys with cancer.

One of them is Andrea Flatow, who is bringing the free Tennis For Life sessions to West Rock Indoor Sports and Entertainment Complex in Bardonia. Affiliated with the Hackensack University Medical Center, it was founded at the Ridgewood (N.J.) Racquet Club in 1998 by Marcia Devens, who died about 10 years ago.

The stimulus is now causing the economy to shed jobs.

When the Obama administration releases a report on the Friday before a long weekend, it’s clearly not trying to draw attention to the report’s contents. Sure enough, the “Seventh Quarterly Report” on the economic impact of the “stimulus,” released on Friday, July 1, provides further evidence that President Obama’s economic “stimulus” did very little, if anything, to stimulate the economy, and a whole lot to stimulate the debt.

The report was written by the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors, a group of three economists who were all handpicked by Obama, and it chronicles the alleged success of the “stimulus” in adding or saving jobs. The council reports that, using “mainstream estimates of economic multipliers for the effects of fiscal stimulus” (which it describes as a “natural way to estimate the effects of” the legislation), the “stimulus” has added or saved just under 2.4 million jobs — whether private or public — at a cost (to date) of $666 billion. That’s a cost to taxpayers of $278,000 per job.

As America prepares to celebrate its 235th  birthday, a plurality of adults still sees the nation’s first president as its greatest founder.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of American adults shows that 43% say George Washington is the greatest founding father of our country, up 11 points from last year. Thomas Jefferson comes in second with 24% who see him has the greatest found father, followed by Benjamin Franklin with 16%.

Just five percent (5%) see both John Adams and James Madison as the greatest founding fathers. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Washington has been at the top of this list since 2006.

Data released earlier shows that Americans continue to strongly believe in the nation’s founding ideals articulated in the Declaration of Independence.  While most believe that governments derive their only just authority from the consent of the governed, only 23% believe the federal government today has such consent.

In fact,  45% believe that the gap between Americans who want to govern themselves and politicians who want to rule over them is now as big as the gap between the American colonies and England during the 18th  Century.

The 4th of July has been an important holiday but today, more and more people do not know why we actually celebrate this day. If you are not up to date on your history of the United States, July 4th, 1776 is the day that the colonies decided to declare themselves independent of Britain. By writing a very detailed decree, they decided that they no longer would need to be governed by the Kings of England that had been so very unjust to the colonists in the years before. On July 4th, America was born. We call the 4th of July Independence Day because this day was the day they declared independence from Great Britain.

We celebrate the fact that we are a free nation that is no under the rule of another. But, there is more to the celebration of independence than just the fact that this is the birthday of the United States. In fact, there are many goals and ideas that are represented in this celebration that until this day we fight for and protect around the world.

The Declaration of Independence, the actual decree in which was signed the independence of the United States, stands as a symbol for all of the things that we, as Americans, believe in. What are the symbols that it stands for?

The right to live with the freedoms of religion, without persecution and with the ability to think and do for yourself.

The courage it takes to protect freedom. It took the individuals that signed the Declaration a great deal of courage to do so as they could have been hung for treason. We use this symbol as a means to remind us that courage is often needed in times when our freedoms are threatened.

A symbol that people can live in a country that is governed by its people and that every person in that country is a very important person for its well being.

We celebrate the 4th of July for a number of reasons. We talk about how the United States of America was born and how many have died for that to happen. We celebrate the fact that we, as a nation, want all people to be free. And, we realize that without the courage and bravery of all those that came before us, we would not have the freedoms that we hold so very dear to us.

A pedestrian was struck by a motor vehicle at the corner of East Ridgewood Avenue and North Maple Avenue at approximately 2:30 PM on Sunday, July 3rd.  The victim suffered minor injuries and was transported to The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood by members of the Ridgewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps.  The driver of the vehicle involved in the collision was issued one summons.

(CNSNews.com) - Forty-nine members of the U.S. House of Representatives--including the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, the chairman of the Republican Policy Committee and two presidential candidates--are pointing to evidence they say is "contradictory" to Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan's confirmation testimony and calling for the House Judiciary Committee to investigate the matter.
The lawmakers also say they believe that evidence already made public shows that Kagan must recuse herself from any court cases involving the health care bill signed into law by President Barack Obama while she was serving as Obama's solicitor general.

"We respectfully call upon the House Judiciary Committee to promptly investigate the extent to which U.S. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan was involved in preparing a legal defense of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) during her tenure as Solicitor General," the 49 lawmakers wrote in a letter to Rep. Lamar Smith (R.-Texas), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Rep. John Conyers (D.-Mich.), the ranking member of the committee.

My new study suggests a simple way to cut college tuition in half.

No sooner do parents proudly watch their children graduate high school than they must begin paying for college. As they write checks for upwards of $40,000 a year, they’ll no doubt find themselves complaining loudly about rising college costs—even asking: “Is it worth it?”

It’s a legitimate question. As college costs have risen wildly, the benefits of the degree seem less and less clear. Larger numbers of college graduates are taking relatively low-paying and low-skilled jobs.

The good news? There are ways to greatly ease the burden and make college more affordable, according to new data from the University of Texas at Austin.

In a study for the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, Christopher Matgouranis, Jonathan Robe and I concluded that tuition fees at the flagship campus of the University of Texas could be cut by as much as half simply by asking the 80% of faculty with the lowest teaching loads to teach about half as much as the 20% of faculty with the highest loads. The top 20% currently handle 57% of all teaching.
