Ridgewood Co-op's Annual Field Day

Ridgewood Co-op's Annual Field Day

The sun shone almost as brightly as the smiles of the children who participated in the Cooperative Nursery School of Ridgewood’s Field Day on May 25, 2011 at Maple Field. This annual event is a chance for the children to spend a day outside with their friends playing and learning about good sportsmanship.  The children participated in a variety of events including baseball, an obstacle course and parachute games and a three legged race with their parents.    Afterwards, all the co-op families enjoyed a picnic lunch

A nonsectarian school, The Co-op also offers morning and afternoon classes for 2, 3 and 4-year-olds, as well as Mommy & Me classes and Kindergarten enrichment.  Setting the school apart from other nursery schools, The Co-op is organized and run by the parents. This enables parents to actively participate in their child's early learning experience.  Music, physical education, field trips, indoor and outdoor play time and an in-house library are just a few of the experiences to which the children are exposed as supplements to the daily education plans.

For more information on the school or to set up an appointment to visit, please call (201) 447-6232 or email the school at ridgewoodcoop@gmail.com.

Health care law waivers stir suspicion of favors

Health care law waivers stir suspicion of favors

By RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR, Associated Press

Call it the Department of Waivers and Adjustments. It's doing a brisk business with the new health care law.
President Barack Obama's administration has granted nearly 1,400 waivers easing requirements of the new health care law, and some critics on the right say Obama is giving his political allies a pass from burdensome requirements everyone else will have to live with.
But what if the waivers work more like a safety valve? What if during the transition to a new system they can prevent unintended consequences — such as people with bare-bones insurance losing their current coverage, or insurers closing shop in a particular state?

On College Campuses, Obama's Not Cool Anymore

On College Campuses, Obama's Not Cool Anymore

BY ELSPETH REEVEJUN 06, 2011

President Obama poll numbers are nearing the levels he enjoyed in 2008, with one glaring exception: young people. Especially young white people.  His approval rating is at 56 percent approval rating among people ages 18 to 29. That's higher than the 51 percent national average, but that's a decline of 10 points compared to the 2008 exit polls, according to the National Journal's Ronald Brownstein report. And if you want a look into the reason for the slump in one of the demographic groups that most strongly embraced Obama in 2008, it may be this: Obama's simply not cool anymore.

The Annual Village home owner flight is upon us

The Annual Village home owner flight is upon us
the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ - So its that time of the year again when  a new generation  of High School  seniors graduates and looks forward to reshaping the world in their own  image . The Future looks bright and there are nothing but an endless horizon of possibilities for as far as the eye can see .

But wait whats this , hundreds of homes for sale in the Village well timed  for sellers to coincidentally  skate just in the nick of time for the diplomas to be passed to the next generation of leaders. Amazing how those moving trucks line up in the driveways  so neatly of so many now former Ridgewood residents their bags packed

Now the empty Nester's take flight ,yes flight from bills due for turf fields, stadium lights , and assorted other  amenities that's useful life has now been fulfilled and long term liabilities must be avoided at all cost for over extended families.Leaving those left with ever higher property taxes , declining maintenance, quality of life and lower educational standards .

Chronic unemployment worse than Great Depression

Chronic unemployment worse than Great Depression
The unemployed have, on average, remained unemployed longer than in the 1930s; Employers wary of job gaps in resumes

(CBS News)  There is an unfortunate adage for the unemployed: The longer folks are out of a job, the longer it takes them to find a new one.

CBS News correspondent Ben Tracy reports that the chronically unemployed face the hardest road back to recovery, and that while the jobs picture may be improving statistically on a national level, it is not for them.

Firms to cut health plans as reform starts: survey
30% of companies say they’ll stop offering Health Insurance coverage due to Obamacare

By Russ Britt, MarketWatch
LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) — Once provisions of the Affordable Care Act start to kick in during 2014, at least three of every 10 employers will probably stop offering health coverage, a survey released Monday shows.

While only 7% of employees will be forced to switch to subsidized-exchange programs, at least 30% of companies say they will “definitely or probably” stop offering employer-sponsored coverage, according to the study published in McKinsey Quarterly.

The survey of 1,300 employers says those who are keenly aware of the health-reform measure probably are more likely to consider an alternative to employer-sponsored plans, with 50% to 60% in this group expected to make a change. It also found that for some, it makes more sense to switch.

Carville: 2012 could be ‘very rough’ for Obama, says civil unrest ‘imminently possible’
Published: 12:15 PM 06/06/2011 | Updated: 2:50 PM 06/06/2011

Who ever thought the saying, “It’s the economy stupid,” from James Carville in 1992 would become a staple in presidential elections 20 years later?

That expression made its way into the campaign in 2008, and according to Carville, it could be the theme of the 2012 campaign as well as President Barack Obama seeks reelection. In an appearance on Monday’s “Imus in the Morning” on the Fox Business Network, the former Clinton adviser said that, based on the May jobs number, if the unemployment picture doesn’t improve, 2012 could be rough for the president.

State health officials examine the proposal by Hackensack University Medical Center and , Legacy Hospital Partners, to spend nearly $40 million to renovate the former Pascack Valley Hospital

N.J. reviews hospital plan near Pearl River

WESTWOOD, N.J. — New Jersey officials have begun reviewing a plan that would open a new general acute-care hospital a few miles over the Rockland County border.

State health officials will examine the proposal by Hackensack University Medical Center and its partner, Legacy Hospital Partners, a private Texas company, to spend nearly $40 million to renovate the former Pascack Valley Hospital in Westwood, N.J. The proposed hospital would provide 128 beds and could open by the end of next year.

Hackensack University Medical Center submitted the Certificate of Need application last week to the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.

When the project was first announced in 2008, top officials from both Nyack Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern wrote letters to New Jersey officials urging them not to approve the new, for-profit hospital at the Pascack location.

How do most towns around our area survive with a volunteer fire department?

How do most towns around our area survive with a volunteer fire department?

How do most towns around our area survive with a volunteer fire department? By comparison Paramus is a much larger town with huge commercial properties yet they have a volunteer department. Granted firemen are some of the finest citizens in our country as they put their lives on the line. However the costs of salaries, pensions and benefits needs a re-evaluation to determine if indeed Ridgewood can make it with a volunteer or reduced pay/pension fire department. And what's the deal with that animal control guy? We don't live adjacent to a National Park with big game roaming through town. Perhaps we can pair him down too.

The Ridgewood FD's call volume is no higher then some of the bigger volunteer departments such as Paramus, Wyckoff, and Franklin Lakes for comparison, and most of their runs comprise of medicals. Like I said the response time argument is their strongest point.

Most towns with volunteer fire departments and ambulance squads are having trouble staffing and maintaining volunteers. In a town like Ridgewood that has always had a paid fire staff, how much luck to you think we would have trying to create, train and staff a "new" volunteer fire department.

Our full time firefighters are first rate, and the response time is super fast. Your homeowner's insurance premiums are lower due to the 'rating' assigned to the Village due to 1. PAID fireman =great response time 2. hydrants/locations. A comparison to Paramus is innacurate since their 'large commercial properties' ARE SPRINKLERED. So they are PROTECTED automatically. If you want to 'pare expenses' then look at what comprised over 75% of the budget=SCHOOLS. thats where you need to cut.

Think about it...would you as a resident rather wait 7-10 min for the first volunteer engine to arrive at your burning house..or 1-3 min. for the paid FD?

Madoff worker slated to plead guilty in plea deal

The Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Prosecutors say the former payroll manager for jailed financier Bernard Madoff's investment firm is set to plead guilty.

Eric Lipkin is expected to enter his plea in federal court in Manhattan Monday to charges including conspiracy, bank fraud and falsifying financial records. Lipkin's lawyer James Filan has declined to comment. The court-appointed trustee trying to recover funds for thousands of Madoff investors has said Lipkin was a member of Madoff's inner circle. The Ridgewood, N.J., resident would be the third person who worked for Madoff to plead guilty to charges.

BREAKING NEWS: Soo Hyeon Park lawsuit against the Village to proceed

BREAKING NEWS:   Soo Hyeon Park lawsuit against the Village to proceed

the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ- A Bergen County Superior Court judge on Friday has tossed out the Village of  Ridgewood's motion for summery judgement in the case of the 13 year old boy Soo Hyeon Park who drowned at Graydon pool in the 2008 .In laymen's terms the judge denied the Village's motion to dismiss the case.

The judge also ruled against the Village's "third party actions filed against against the parents of a 13-year-old Korean boy who drowned at Graydon Pool during that summer and the boys two teenage friends and their parents, all Ridgewood residents , as members of Graydon Pool. With the Villages motions now thrown out the case is now set to proceed .

The case has been unusually long due to the complexity and depth or issues at play.

Sources close to the case have also made it clear that they are in no way aliened with any of the parties involved in either the "Action Park "or Preserve Historical Graydon groups and that their duty is to represent the plaintiffs in their lawsuit against the Village. This action  in no way should be misrepresented by either group or any particular person as meaningful to their cause. Sources close to the case reiterated that ," a new pool not my cause".

In an event that shocked the entire town Soo Hyeon Park died tragically on July 15, 2008. Park drowned in the deep end of Graydon pool. The boy’s family filed a complaint with Bergen County Superior Court on Feb. 19, 2009, claiming the village was negligent in the drowning ,seeking "pecuniary damages and losses." The Village  responded by filing a "third party action"  on Feb. 3rd . The complaint "alleged negligence" against the boy’s parents, Youn Wha Jung and Seong Wook Park and the boys two teenage friends and their parents.

Celebrate the Constitution : the Black Founders and the Continental Army

Celebrate the Constitution : the Black Founders and the Continental Army

In keeping with this year's theme is "Celebrate the Constitution” for the Ridgewood Fourth of July Celebration ,the Ridgewood blog will be running a series of post under the "Celebrate the Constitution" label ,featuring the founding fathers ,their stories and their ideas .

We are going to start with what may surprise many of you ;the Black founders and yes there were many of them . The Black Founders are reprinted with permission from The Founders, Religion and Government (Facebook) http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Founders-Religion-and-Government/106677312693315

For many years the actions of black men, women, and children in our nation's founding has been largely ignored. The enslavement of black Americans was prominent, not their contributions. We read about those slaves who joined the British Army to gain their freedom. But what of the thousands of blacks who served this country in her hour of need? Their deeds were no less important than those of their white neighbors. They fought and died on the battlefields. They road the countryside as couriers. They held office. The wrote in support of independence. The led their communities.

Today we are going to start with the Continental Army itself.

Many black men served as soldiers in the American Revolution. The number is between 12,000 and 15,000. Some were slaves fighting for the promise of freedom. Others were free blacks fighting for their country's liberty. They served in an integrated army, the last one until the Korean War. By 1779, 15% of the Continental Army was black. These men fought in the very first Battles of Lexington and Concord all the way to the final major battle at Yorktown. They saw action in every major engagement including Ticonderoga, Monmouth, and Princeton. They suffered at Valley Forge and crossed the Delaware with Washington. Every colony except South Carolina and Georgia sent black men with the white men to fight.

In addition to the integrated units, there were also three all black units that served: the Rhode Island First regiment, who fought with distinction at Newport, Monmouth and Yorktown; the Black Bucks of America, a Massachusetts regiment whose banner is still on display at the Massachusetts Historical Society; and the Volunteer Chasseurs, a regiment from Haiti brought over by our French allies. The latter unit took the ideas of liberty back to Haiti with them. Those ideas were used to overthrow their French masters and create the second republic in the Americas.

Graydon Pool : The disheartening use of a tragic death to make cheap points

Graydon Pool : The disheartening use of a tragic death to make cheap points
PJ Blogger and the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood - NJ It is very disheartening to see certain people and groups in town continue to try to make cheap points  on the tragic drowning of Soo Hyeon Park in order to promote there version of a  $13 or is $20 million "action park"  like water park they want installed at tax payer expense  in what now sits Historic Graydon Pool .

It is a new low in public discourse . Regardless of the outcome of the law suite against the Village no amount of money will ever bring this child back . Resident were horrified over the incident  and the entire Village shared in the sadness of the families loss until of coarse some people saw the death as an opportunity to push forward their own agenda .

It is extremely distasteful at best and offensive to most to use a child's death  as being emblematic of your cause. Even the attorney for the family has distanced himself from the whole "action park" cause stating over and over that he is representing his clients and that's it. It is also no wounder that the distinguished David Bolger as dropped the project saying at the time that is was just to controversial .

The fact of the matter is that the Boy did not speak English, and could not swim !  Even highly trained US servicemen drowned within less than 1 minute at Omaha Beach on D-Day .

Far more people have been hit by cars or killed in crosswalks in Ridgewood in the last 5 years than drowned at Graydon Pool in 100 years .

Few if any town pools in Bergen County have increased membership in the last 10 years , most municipal pools now invite in all takers.

The parking meters in Ridgewood routinely lose more money than Graydon Pool.  In fact a certain Golden Toilet at Vets Field cost 3 to 4 seasons of Graydons losses.

Despite the hype there was no proof that any money was every raised to renovate Graydon nor were there any proof of any huge demand  for the "action park " idea. The claim of 6,000 new members was specious and never materialized. The Ridgewood blog will publish all that names of the families that are gracious enough to put up the cash for the new pool if they are willing to show themselves.

Yes the pool needs some modernization and some upgrades but the "action park " group immediately proposed the most expensive $14 million proposal they could find making the project in a recessionary environment DOA.

In Europe the natural look is all the rage for pools and you would think in this "eco" crazy environment Historic Graydon would be a given.

Graydon for decades was the cultural center of Ridgewood summers , it was more than just a pool ,its was a place to go be seen ,play basketball, hang out and enjoy the sun . Graydon is an opportunity so few people have. Like a lot of kids  I learned how to swim there and that's the magic words ,learn how to swim.

US house price fall 'beats Great Depression slide'

US house price fall 'beats Great Depression slide'
By Stephen Foley
Wednesday, 1 June 2011

The ailing US housing market passed a grim milestone in the first quarter of this year, posting a further deterioration that means the fall in house prices is now greater than that suffered during the Great Depression.

The brief recovery in prices in 2009, spurred by government aid to first-time buyers, has now been entirely snuffed out, and the average American home now costs 33 per cent less than it did at the peak of the housing bubble in 2007. The peak-to-trough fall in house prices in the 1930s Depression was 31 per cent – and prices took 19 years to recover after that downturn.

More and More Americans think the economy will never come back

More and More Americans think the economy will never come back

The mixed signals regarding the economy's health are taking a toll.

About 10 percent of Americans say they never expect their spending to return to pre-recession levels.
Americans are growing increasingly doubtful about direction of the US economy, according to the latest survey from business-advisory firm AlixPartners.

In fact, an increasing number, some 61 percent, say they don't expect to return to their respective pre-recession lifestyles until the spring of 2014, if ever.
What's worse, a full 10 percent said they expect they will never return to pre-recession spending.
That's a more pessimistic view than last year, when those surveyed expected that they could be back to pre-recession spending levels by the middle of 2013.

Job Market Implodes

N.J. is expected to mirror nation’s ‘deep hole’ on job front
Saturday, June 4, 2011
BY JOAN VERDON
STAFF WRITER
The Record

The U.S. economy generated 54,000 jobs in May, less than one-third of what was expected, a signal that New Jersey needs to continue to seek new ways to create jobs, say state economists, industry leaders and business owners.

Friday’s weak job numbers are worrisome because New Jersey is expected to mirror that trend. But instead of looking at one month’s results, experts say the state should be focusing on the years ahead and working to fuel job growth in the future.

Ridgewood Water Has Levels of Arsenic Above Drinking Water Standard

Our water system recently experienced a drinking water standard violation for arsenic at one of the 51 wells that supply water to the system. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we did and are doing to correct this situation.

What happened?

We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants. On May 9, 2011, we received notice that a water sample collected from one of our wells on March 8, 2011 had an arsenic concentration that exceeds the New Jersey standard, or maximum contaminant level (MCL) for arsenic. The New Jersey standard for arsenic is 5 parts per billion or ppb. The average level of arsenic in this single well over the last year of sampling was 5.75 ppb. None of the samples collected from this well exceeded the federal MCL of 10 ppb.

Note that the elevated result was obtained from only one of the 51 active supply wells. The remaining wells, plus water purchased from United Water, exhibited arsenic levels below the New Jersey MCL. Arsenic is a naturally-occurring substance in groundwater in the Ridgewood area. Samples collected in May 2011 show that the reported laboratory results may have overstated the actual concentration.

What should I do? • There is nothing you need to do. You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective actions. However, if you have specific health concerns, consult your doctor.
• If you have a severely compromised immune system, have an infant, are pregnant, or are elderly, you may be at increased risk and should seek advice from your health care providers about drinking this water.

What does this mean?

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified within 24 hours. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years could experience skin damage or problems with their circulatory system, and may have an increased risk of getting cancer.

What is being done?

Ridgewood Water has turned off this well while we investigate the situation. We have collected additional samples and anticipate resolving the arsenic issue at this well within 2 months.

The Kasschau Memorial Shell is an outdoor amphitheater located on Veteran's Field in the center of Ridgewood, and dedicated in 1958 as a tribute to Frank Kasschau, an accomplished and beloved musician in Ridgewood. Its purpose is to provide a variety of free quality family entertainment twice weekly from early June through mid-August.

The Kasschau Memorial Shell operates under the auspices of the Village of Ridgewood in cooperation with the Department of Parks and Recreation. In addition, many local organizations and business provide much needed funds to support these programs.
