National History Day (NHD): students who participate in NHD far outperform their peers on state standardized tests

National History Day (NHD). : the results of the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) ‘Civics Report Card’ were just released.

Executive director of NHD, Cathy Gorn, released the following statement:

“These latest results are further proof that Congress and the Administration need to focus on history education. Simply put history education matters. It is nothing short of a threat to our participatory democracy when our students do not know the purpose of the Bill of Rights or how our government works. We need to put history and civics back into their rightful place in the curriculum through quality, evidence-based teaching and learning fostered by programs that work.”

A recent study shows that students who participate in NHD far outperform their peers on state standardized tests and are better prepared for college and the workplace. NHD is working hard to ensure American students receive a well rounded education. We would love to continue to share their efforts with you moving forward. If you have any questions, please just let me know.

Ridgewood council seeks 'proper' venue for Valley hearings

Village Council  is looking to avoid another "George Washington Vally Meeting fiasco", discussing venue , when and the appropriate format.

Ridgewood council seeks 'proper' venue for Valley hearings
Friday, May 6, 2011

THE RIDGEWOOD NEWS
Staff Writer

The Village Council has started the process of deciding when and where to hold hearings on the Valley Hospital "Renewal" proposal.

At a meeting on Wednesday, council members focused on three main points that will guide their decision.

When?

The first concern dealt with whether to begin public meetings as soon as possible or hold off until September, after the summer months when many Ridgewood residents go on vacation.

"We're now starting to get into, by the time we get this going, the summer months," Mayor Keith Killion said. "There have been concerns with some residents that this is prime time for vacation. Should we really have these hearings during the summer when people would be away and might not have time to speak?"

Legislators in Trenton need to get to work and stop the silly stupid feel good solutions to problems that don't exist

More nanny state stuff from legislators who have bankrupted our state. You'd think they would have more important things to deal with.

Never a dull moment in Trenton. I dislike pet abusers as much as the next guy, but we need our legislators to prioritize. How about cutting a few billion of costs and making the state solvent again? Or maybe fixing the pension system or the Abbott school districts

Lets say, get to work boys and girls. Slash spending and cut waste, lower taxes, rescind job killing regulations, reform education and how it is delivered to our inner city youth, oh my the list is long and I could go on and on.

No more silly stupid laws that are sophist feel good solutions to problems that don't exist.

Meetings on hospital plan put on hold

The Ridgewood Village Council will not hold any meetings until fall on a change in the master plan that will permit The Valley Hospital to double in size, council members decided Wednesday.

Councilwoman Bernadette Walsh suggested weighing in on the plan as early as June and devoting several meetings over the summer to the amended master plan, all of which would be scheduled well in advance so the public could plan accordingly, she said.

However, Mayor Keith Killion and the rest of the council opted to wait until the fall to conduct meetings to give residents ample opportunity to attend meetings.

"My feelings were, we’ve waited long enough,’’ Walsh said Thursday. "We’re kind of putting everyone on hold.’’

RIDGEWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOLS :ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY TARGETED FOR NEXT WEEK

RIDGEWOOD PUBLIC SCHOOLS :ANNUAL PARENT SURVEY TARGETED FOR NEXT WEEK

Once again, the Ridgewood Public Schools will be conducting a survey to determine parent/guardian opinions on a variety of topics related to the district. A similar survey was last conducted last June, at the end of the 2009-2010 school year.

The purpose of the brief survey is to gather parent and guardian’s opinions on district schools and the education Ridgewood students receive. The survey is divided into five sections: school climate, academics, extracurricular activities, facilities and communications. Also included is a section covering the Skyward student information system, newly implemented this school year. The data collected will be shared with the community and will be used by the Board of Education as part of its evaluation of district policies and practices.

Parents will be receiving the surveys next week via e-mail. They will receive one e-mail for each school their children attend, which will include a link to access the survey. Parents will be instructed to complete only one survey for each school that their children are enrolled, regardless of the number of children attending a particular school. For example, if a household has two children enrolled at a district elementary school and one child at the high school, links to two surveys will be send to each parent.

Responses to survey questions will remain completely confidential.

A dedicated e-mail address has been set up to take questions or concerns at survey11@ridgewood.k12.nj.us.

Jobless claims jump points to slowing recovery

Jobless claims jump points to slowing recovery

On Thursday May 5, 2011, 5:00 pm EDT
By Lucia Mutikani

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing for jobless aid rose to an eight-month high last week and productivity growth slowed in the first quarter, clouding the outlook for an economy that is struggling to gain speed.

While the surprise jump in initial claims for unemployment benefits was blamed on factors ranging from spring break layoffs to the introduction of an emergency benefits program, economists said it corroborated reports this week indicating a loss of momentum in job creation.

New claims for state jobless benefits rose 43,000 to 474,000, the highest since mid-August, the Labor Department said on Thursday. Economists had expected claims to fall.

National Home Prices Double Dip

National Home Prices Double Dip
Published: Thursday, 5 May 2011 | 12:02 AM ET Text Size
By: Diana Olick

It's official.

Home prices have double dipped nationwide, now lower than their March 2009 trough, according to a new report from Clear Capital.

It was inevitable, and it was predicted (by me for sure) that a surge in sales of foreclosed properties and a big push by banks to facilitate short sales would force home prices down dramatically.

Sales of bank-owned (REO) properties hit 34.5 percent of the market, according to the survey, resulting in a national price drop of 4.9 percent quarterly and 5 percent year-over-year. National home prices have fallen 11.5 percent in the past nine months, a rate not seen since 2008. Add short sales, where the bank allows the borrower to sell for less than the value of the mortgage, and prices have nowhere to go but down.

TAKE A WALK WITH WILDSCAPE SUNDAY, MOTHERS DAY

TAKE A WALK WITH WILDSCAPE SUNDAY, MOTHERS DAY

Ridgewood NJ - Did you know we have a 32 acre, wooded open space right in Ridgewood? Grove Park, located on Grove Street, just before Paramus Road, is a quiet area, with native trees and plants, and migrating birds. It borders the Saddle River.

Ridgewood Wildscape Association has, as its goal, to acquaint residents with the precious open spaces in Ridgewood.

This Sunday, Mother's Day, at 11AM, we are sponsoring a one hour walk through Grove Park, with Dr. Mike Sebitich, Prof. of Biology at Wm. Paterson University. Dr. Sebitich will identify trees and plants, and whatever else we come across.

The only way to protect our open spaces is by appreciating them.

We will meet at the sign "Grove Park" at 11AM. Bring binoculars if you have them, we may be lucky enough to spot some migrating and resident birds as well. Also, bring a small bag to pick up any trash and recyclables that may be on the ground.

All ages are welcome. Bring your friends, bring your neighbors, but most important, bring yourself !

Florence Schedler property purchase property was to allow for a multi-use recreational property

Florence Schedler property purchase property was to allow for a multi-use recreational property

The purpose of purchasing the property was to allow for a multi-use recreational property that included ball fields, specifically a baseball field, and passive recreation (walking paths, etc). The committee that worked on that effort did so with that understanding and the VC approved the purchase on that basis. Although, the specific facility designs were not finalized, it is totally inappropriate for the new VC to pander to certain groups (after the fact) and "object" to the inclusion of Schedler Field in their long term policy.

As someone who spent a lot of time on the effort to prevent that property from being developed commercially, I find it extremely offensive that people, who spent no time or effort to preserve that property, are now attempting to change the intended use. The VC should show some integrity and support the people that work hard on behalf of this community, rather than changing their views depending on which way the "PC winds" are blowing on any given day.
