AOL buys Huffington Post for $315 million

AOL buys Huffington Post for $315 million
one small voice

Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington announced late Sunday that the site agreed to a $315 million buyout offer from AOL. This deal guarantees AOL will be closely watched not only by media observers but also by Silicon Valley companies.

The very liberal-leaning Huffington Post online news site has been one of the few internet content start-up success stories with over 1000 contributors and sizable ad revenue. AOL is the elder statesman of online access and digital content. It is also the owner of the "Patch " local blog network which our own local Ridgewood Patch is part of.

It was less than a week ago that a document called “The AOL Way” was leaked showing how serious AOL is about its latest incarnation of the strategy to shift from a "technology" company to media company. Many industry insiders were caught unaware that people were still refereed to AOL as a "technology" company .

Its seems like only yesterday when we heard all this the first time with the much ballyhooed AOL/Time Warner merger. The merger marked the begging of the end of AOL network dominance and some would also suggest the the beginning of the end of the of the dot com boom turning AOL.com into the first dot bomb .

Report from Tampico, Illinois on Reagan's 100th birthday

It was an inauspicious start to February 6, 2011--the 100th birthday of the greatest president of the 20th century, Ronald Wilson Reagan. Snow--just five days after the third-worst blizzard in northern Illinois history. Driving on rural interstates and highways is challenging when it snows, but luckily, the flakes stopped falling in the middle of the morning and I left Morton Grove for Tampico--127 miles away in Whiteside

If you think government is a competent solver of social problems, think again. The Star Ledger reported (“N.J. tax to help low-income people pay cable TV bills was instead used to plug budget hole,” Feb. 6) that a fund established in 2006 by the Corzine administration to help low income and disabled New Jerseyans pay their cable bills has never been used as it was intended. Its Cold but is it safe to skate
the Staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ - Bergen County officials measured the ice over the Wild Duck Pond at Saddle River County Park. The ice was nine-inches thick, however the pond remained off-limits to skaters. The County requires five inch thick ice as the minimum, but other factors are also considered notably how warm it was on Sunday.

Ridgewood’s Twinney Pond has been open to skaters for the past several days, but King’s Pond and Graydon Pool have remained closed to skaters. According to Timothy Cronin, Ridgewood’s director of Parks and Recreation, ponds need at least six inches of ice before officials consider opening them.

Snow and freezing rain in recent storms hasn’t helped. According to Cronin , “You need cold temperatures, no snow, so you can get that clear ice to form,” Cronin said. “Snow is an insulator; it insulates the ice, so when you have snow over the ice, it melts the ice.” Officials said they post signs when both county and municipal ponds are closed.

Americans recall Reagan legacy on his 100th birthday

Americans recall Reagan legacy on his 100th birthday

Ronald Reagan - 40th President

At the end of his two terms in office, Ronald Reagan viewed with satisfaction the achievements of his innovative program known as the Reagan Revolution, which aimed to reinvigorate the American people and reduce their reliance upon Government. He felt he had fulfilled his campaign pledge of 1980 to restore "the great, confident roar of American progress and growth and optimism."

On February 6, 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan was born to Nelle and John Reagan in Tampico, Illinois. He attended high school in nearby Dixon and then worked his way through Eureka College. There, he studied economics and sociology, played on the football team, and acted in school plays. Upon graduation, he became a radio sports announcer. A screen test in 1937 won him a contract in Hollywood. During the next two decades he appeared in 53 films.

From his first marriage to actress Jane Wyman, he had two children, Maureen and Michael. Maureen passed away in 2001. In 1952 he married Nancy Davis, who was also an actress, and they had two children, Patricia Ann and Ronald Prescott.

As president of the Screen Actors Guild, Reagan became embroiled in disputes over the issue of Communism in the film industry; his political views shifted from liberal to conservative. He toured the country as a television host, becoming a spokesman for conservatism. In 1966 he was elected Governor of California by a margin of a million votes; he was re-elected in 1970.

Ronald Reagan won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1980 and chose as his running mate former Texas Congressman and United Nations Ambassador George Bush. Voters troubled by inflation and by the year-long confinement of Americans in Iran swept the Republican ticket into office. Reagan won 489 electoral votes to 49 for President Jimmy Carter.

On January 20, 1981, Reagan took office. Only 69 days later he was shot by a would-be assassin, but quickly recovered and returned to duty. His grace and wit during the dangerous incident caused his popularity to soar.

Dealing skillfully with Congress, Reagan obtained legislation to stimulate economic growth, curb inflation, increase employment, and strengthen national defense. He embarked upon a course of cutting taxes and Government expenditures, refusing to deviate from it when the strengthening of defense forces led to a large deficit.

A renewal of national self-confidence by 1984 helped Reagan and Bush win a second term with an unprecedented number of electoral votes. Their victory turned away Democratic challengers Walter F. Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.

In 1986 Reagan obtained an overhaul of the income tax code, which eliminated many deductions and exempted millions of people with low incomes. At the end of his administration, the Nation was enjoying its longest recorded period of peacetime prosperity without recession or depression.

In foreign policy, Reagan sought to achieve "peace through strength." During his two terms he increased defense spending 35 percent, but sought to improve relations with the Soviet Union. In dramatic meetings with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, he negotiated a treaty that would eliminate intermediate-range nuclear missiles. Reagan declared war against international terrorism, sending American bombers against Libya after evidence came out that Libya was involved in an attack on American soldiers in a West Berlin nightclub.

By ordering naval escorts in the Persian Gulf, he maintained the free flow of oil during the Iran-Iraq war. In keeping with the Reagan Doctrine, he gave support to anti-Communist insurgencies in Central America, Asia, and Africa.

Overall, the Reagan years saw a restoration of prosperity, and the goal of peace through strength seemed to be within grasp.

Ridgewood looks at merit raises

Ridgewood looks at merit raises
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ- The village manager Ken Gabbert is proposing a revolutionary way to pay management and non-union employees their raises. This new approach could be the first of its kind for New Jersey public employees.

Gabbert has proposed that raises for managers and non-union employees will be doled out from an "incentive pool." The raises will would be based merit and determined by an evaluation system resulting in a potential salary increase of up to 4 percent. The basic increase for 2010/2011 will be zero and under the new incentive system and individual will be open to receiving anywhere between zero and 4 percent .

This concept however common in the private industry would put Ridgewood in the leadership role and a model of the rest of the state when it comes to municipal workers. Gabbert's idea is to have the incentive awarded, split evenly between the two years , meaning a 3 percent award is 1.5 percent effective Jan. 1, 2010 and 1.5 percent effective Jan. 1, 2011 , which in today's environment is still rather generous.

The Village Council seems to supporting the idea with some reservations and would have to pass an ordinance to adopt the new incentive-based system.

Congressman Scott Garrett: Obama Administration Must Halt Healthcare Law Implementation

Congressman Scott Garrett: Obama Administration Must Halt Healthcare Law Implementation

WASHINGTON, February 1, 2011 - Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ), Founder and Chairman of the Congressional Constitution Caucus, today sent a letter to the Obama administration requesting it halt implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act until the Supreme Court has had time to review the law’s constitutionality. Garrett’s letter was sent after U.S. District Court Judge Roger Vinson of Northern Florida ruled in a case brought by 26 state governments that the individual mandate provision of the law is unconstitutional because it violates the Constitution’s Commerce Clause.

“As Judge Vinson points out in his ruling, the individual mandate clearly falls outside the authority granted to Congress under the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution and is therefore unconstitutional,” said Garrett after sending the letter. “Without the individual mandate, the Democrats’ healthcare reform law has no legs to stand on, which makes the Obama administration’s efforts to implement it an act of futility. In light of the ruling in Florida, it’s only appropriate that the administration cease and desist in its efforts to implement the law and wait for an opinion from the Supreme Court, which I believe will ultimately reaffirm the ruling from Judge Vinson.”

Garrett has long been an outspoken critic of the federal health care law, particularly the individual mandate. On the opening day of the 112th Congress, Garrett re-introduced H.R. 21, the Reclaiming Individual Liberty Act, which would repeal the individual mandate portion of the federal health care law on the grounds that it is unconstitutional.

N.J. population shifting from heavily Democratic North

N.J. population shifting from heavily Democratic North
By Shane D'Aprile - 02/04/11 12:32 PM ET

New detailed Census data released Thursday for New Jersey shows population growth concentrated in the central and southern parts of the state, which could make it harder for Democrats to ensure the loss of a single congressional seat comes at the expense of a Republican.

The state must shed a congressional district this year, and two potential Republican targets will use the new data to bolster the argument to leave their districts alone.

Seniority tends to rule the roost in the state's congressional redistricting process, so speculation has centered on GOP Reps. Leonard Lance and Jon Runyan, who was just elected in November.

But Runyan's district contains Ocean County, which saw the largest population growth of any county in the state, further bolstering the case that he won't be a redistricting target

Readers continue to question whether the added tax revenue of additional development covers the costs.

Readers continue to question whether the added tax revenue of additional development covers the costs.

Ridgewood NJ- The two houses will bring twice the number of children. How much does it cost to educate a child in Ridgewood? Recently I saw the number $14,000. If those two homes have three children in each we will need $41,000 per home just to cover the school costs. We are not coming out ahead.

It is not the young professionals or empty nesters buying homes in Ridgewood. It is people with children. As we are told time and time again people chose to move to Ridgewood for the schools.

Electronic Waste Management Act : Disposal Ban on Electronics - Jan 31 2011

Electronic Waste Management Act : Disposal Ban on Electronics - Jan 31 2011

The State of New Jersey has significantly revised its regulations to enact a disposal ban on electronics as solid waste. Effective January 1, 2011, the Electronic Waste Management Act (NJSA 13:1E-99.94 et seq.) requires that all “used covered electronic devices” be recycled. The law defines a “used covered electronic device” as a desktop or personal computer, computer monitor, portable computer, or television sold to a consumer.

Electronic equipment is accepted at the Ridgewood Recycling Center at 205 East Glen Avenue. The computer and electronic recycling program provided at the Recycling Center, is at no cost to the Village, and provides an easy option for residents to recycle their computers and electronics. Upon arrival at the Recycling Center, each resident may place their computer components and electronic devices into our convenient walk-in container.

Accepted items (which must NOT be placed in household trash) include:

• Computers (Desktop or Portable) • Printers

• Televisions • Keyboards

• Monitors • Scanners

• Fax Machines • Keyboards

• Televisions • Speakers

• Stereo Equipment • Modems

• Electronic Mouse • Cell Phones

• Desktop Copy Machines • Power Sources

• Hard Drives • VCRs

• DVD players • Video Game Consoles

The Recycling Center at 205 East Glen Avenue has the following, convenient hours:

Monday – Saturday 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Ridgewood residents have always embraced recycling for its cost avoidance and environmental benefits. As a result, Ridgewood has enjoyed a savings of over $12.8 million, since New Jersey mandated recycling in 1987. As a community, may all continue to work together towards the goal of responsible environmental practices and greater reductions in solid waste.

Village Car Wash?

Village Car Wash?
the staff of the Ridgewood blog

Ridgewood NJ- The Village of Ridgewood is looking to get into the car wash business , it all depends on the kind of return on investment the village can get from installing such a facility.

At Wednesday night's Village Council workshop while discussing a $71,000 budget reserve transfer resolution, Deputy Mayor Tom Riche pointed to a $3,500 line item for the annual payment for washing vehicles in the town's fleet.

The washing charge covers vehicles ranging from garbage trucks to police cruisers, Riche raised the possibility of Ridgewood installing its own car washing facility, which could then be used, not only for Ridgewood vehicles, but also as a shared service for other towns' municipal vehicles.

Critics suggest that the real problem is that the Village only wastes $3,500 annually when doing it themselves the could wastes hundreds of thousands of dollars. Given these are the guys that brought us a $400,000 toilet at Vets field and the Village still manages significant revenue loss from the parking meters in the central business district it doesn't seem like a very good idea .
