Math Wars: Students in Singapore have repeatedly ranked at or near the top on international math exams since the mid-1990s

Making Math Lessons as Easy as 1, Pause, 2, Pause ...
By WINNIE HU

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/01/education/01math.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=math&st=cse

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — By the time they get to kindergarten, children in this well-to-do suburb already know their numbers, so their teachers worried that a new math program was too easy when it covered just 1 and 2 —and 2 — for a whole week.

“Talk about the number 1 for 45 minutes?” said Chris Covello, who teaches 16 students ages 5 and 6. “I was like, I don’t know. But then I found you really could. Before, we had a lot of ground to cover, and now it’s more open-ended and gets kids thinking.”

The slower pace is a cornerstone of the district’s new approach to teaching math, which is based on the national math system of Singapore and aims to emulate that country’s success by promoting a deeper understanding of numbers and math concepts. Students in Singapore have repeatedly ranked at or near the top on international math exams since the mid-1990s.

Franklin Lakes, about 30 miles northwest of Manhattan, is one of dozens of districts, from Scarsdale, N.Y., to Lexington, Ky., that in recent years have adopted Singapore math, as it is called, amid growing concerns that too many American students lack the higher-order math skills called for in a global economy.

For decades, efforts to improve math skills have driven schools to embrace one math program after another, abandoning a program when it does not work and moving on to something purportedly better. In the 1960s there was the “new math,” whose focus on abstract theories spurred a back-to-basics movement, emphasizing rote learning and drills. After that came “reform math,” whose focus on problem solving and conceptual understanding has been derided by critics as the “new new math.”

Math Wars: "Connected Math is a nightmare."

Math Wars: "Connected Math is a nightmare."

Connected Math is a nightmare. The kids have moved around a few topice since the beginning of the year. I can't tell if it is a review or "spiraling". When there are questions about the homework, the book is no help. It was designed without examples of problems. The webside is just like the book - very vague.

It is as if our school administrators want the kids to fail. I was on the internet looking for formulas and sample problems to work with. When are they going to admit their mistake? Someone should own up to it. Are we really better off then when we used a standard math program?

That program looks like a good system but my guess is it would require a good teacher with a good sequential lesson plan. The material is not that far removed from what I learned at that age (I remember touching on a little trigonometry before high school though).

I smell a business oppty for a good tutor...maybe I should bone up on CM and hang out a plaque...

RPS have created more opportunities for tutors. The math program spends little time on many topice. There is no mastery. There is not a sequential lesson plan because the program is based on "spiraling". They keep moving through topics and then spiral backwards from time to time.

Oct 5 - Planning Board Discusses Ordinance change and does not inform the public

Oct 5 - Planning Board Discusses Ordinance change and does not inform the public

The Agenda for last night’s Planning Board meeting was not published before the meeting and is still not on the Village website. Despite the missing agenda, the attorney for Valley Charles Collins and the PR VP for Valley, Megan Fraser arrived at the meeting promptly at 7:25 PM. Were they tipped off by someone on the Board, the attorney of the Chairman?

For 90 minutes, the Village Planner, Blais, reviewed the draft ordnance for the H-Zone, followed by comments and was questioned by some members of the board. Blais will be incorporating comments and re-present to the Planning Board at the next meeting, October 19.

It seems that Planning Board is still in the game of ignoring the public and working closely with Valley. Is it time for the Council to act and remove the Board chairman and Board attorney?

How does the Village justify a tax assessment that is around 20% inflated?

How does the Village justify a tax assessment that is around 20% inflated?

They are not in any hurry to roll back the valuations they assigned at the peak of the bubble.

The below is public info so I'll leave it up to the Mod as to whether it posts:

119 Oak is for sale for $850k. Its tax assessment (according to Zillow) is closer to $1M, which is about what that house would have sold for at the height of the bubble. A couple years ago, 2007 I think, the taxes jumped from $11k and change, to over $17k (it's possible a lot of this was precipitated by a renovation but I don't own the house so I don't know)!

It is a beautiful house, but I doubt it will sell for $850k. $750-$800k maybe. How does the Village justify a tax assessment that is around 20% inflated?

I bought a house last year for about 20% less than the tax assessment value. The appeal is in process. Trust me, their feet are deep in the sand. As I said, they are in no hurry. They have to pay for their castle on Maple somehow...

Americans for Prosperity to Congressman Adler: Stop Using AFP as a Smokescreen to Hide Your Big Government Record

Americans for Prosperity to Congressman Adler: Stop Using AFP as a Smokescreen to Hide Your Big Government Record

BOGOTA,NJ – Americans for Prosperity is responding today to Congressman John Adler’s call for his opponent in New Jersey’s 3rd District, Jon Runyan, to denounce the state’s leading free market organization.

AFP state director Steve Lonegan addressed Adler’s statements made at a press conference today and published on PolitickerNJ.com.

“Like so many of his House colleagues, Congressman Adler wants to do anything but talk about his failed big government record.

“Americans for Prosperity wants people to be rich and enjoy a fruitful retirement, while John Adler wants them to live off of a meager stipend.

“Congressman Adler’s call for his opponent Jon Runyan to denounce our organization is nothing short of bizarre and smacks of a candidate desperate to gain traction with voters. Congressman Adler’s outlandish attacks are nothing but an attempt to divert attention from his support of the radical Pelosi agenda he has aided and abetted for the past two years.

“The fact of the matter is the truth hurts and John Adler doesn’t want his constituents to know his true record. John Adler doesn’t like that Americans for Prosperity is educating the voters and giving them the facts about his support for billions in failed stimulus and Wall Street bailouts -- and a job-destroying Cap & Trade energy tax.

“At this point there’s nothing left in the playbook except for Adler to demonize his opponents, try to fool voters about his record and make ridiculous assertions about AFP.”

As part of Americans for Prosperity’s November Is Coming campaign, the free market organization is leading a nationwide, grassroots effort to educate voters about the records of incumbent representatives in over sixty key swing districts. The campaign also includes an advertising blitz on radio and TV.

Donovan Unveils 4 Point Plan for Bergen County Fiscal Sanity

Donovan Unveils 4 Point Plan for Bergen County Fiscal Sanity

Bergen County Executive Candidate, Kathleen A. Donovan, announced today her plan to make government "smaller, smarter and fiscally responsible." Donovan said that her "4 Point Plan for Bergen County Taxpayers" is not just a plan. "It's a pledge to Bergen County taxpayers, families and seniors that government is going to change for the better."

According to Donovan, "My plan is very simple and basic. It mirrors the practices we employed in the County Clerk's Office which enabled us to generate enough revenue over expense to save each Bergen County family $300. Unfortunately, that money could not be returned to taxpayers and instead was turned over to county government where it was undoubtedly wasted. That will change when I'm elected County Executive."

The Donovan plan:
1. Immediately freeze county taxes and spending for one year.
2. Immediately begin to audit 100% of every dollar Bergen County spends.
3. Cut the waste, EVERYWHERE we find it!
4. Cap County spending at historic lows (no greater than the rate of inflation).

At the core of Donovan's plan is her commitment to immediately freeze county taxes and spending for one year. "To paraphrase Ronald Reagan," Donovan said, "I could say that Dennis McNerney has been spending like a drunken sailor, but that would be an insult to sailors, as they are spending their own money." During McNerney's tenure as County Executive, county spending has increased by $34 million ($34,577,509), an increase of over 31%. "Dennis has his hand in every pocket in Bergen County," said Donovan, "and he needs to realize the taxpayers of Bergen County can't afford him there anymore."

Donovan said that she will immediately begin to audit 100% of every dollar Bergen County spends. "When I hear that an agency (BCIA), that handles hundreds of millions of dollars annually is 'lacking basic financial controls', that's a huge red flag," said Donovan, "Who's minding the County? A Donovan administration will always be mindful that we are spending your money, the taxpayers' money; and I want to know how and why every dollar is spent."

Donovan pledged to Cut the waste, EVERYWHERE we find it! Citing a recent Record article, Donovan said, "Should Bergen County taxpayers be footing the bill for acupuncture for horses, flower arrangements and extravagant expense accounts?" According to The Record, $10,000 was charged at the county owned stable in Leonia for acupuncture treatments for horse! This facility is still not open to the public, yet since 2003 they have mounted up $500,000 in debt with the troubled Bergen County Improvement Authority (BCIA).

In addition, audits show that McNerney ally Ed Hynes (recently retired BCIA executive director) was running up over $800 a month in personal expense; that adds up to $48,000 since 2006.

Finally, Donovan pledged to Cap County spending at historic lows (no greater than the rate of inflation). "McNerney claims that he cut the budget by $1 million this year," said Donovan. "That's a joke, and a bad one. McNerney increased spending and borrowing by $32 million this year alone!"

Donovan, in her tenure as our County Clerk has saved each Bergen County family over $300 through efficient delivery of services. "McNerney and the Democrats have raised taxes a whopping $110 million or 101% greater than the rate of inflation, costing taxpayers over $100 million dollars in higher property taxes," continued Donovan, "McNerney has increased the County debt by 141% and the total debt now stands at over 1.1 Billion dollars (that's Billion with a B). Every man, woman and child in Bergen County now owes over $1,271.71 (or more than $5,000 per family) as their share of Bergen County's debt because of McNerney's exorbitant, wasteful spending."

"I pledge to you and every taxpayer in Bergen County, that as your next County Executive, Bergen County government will be smaller, smarter and honest. There will be a change in attitude that puts taxpayers first", Donovan concluded.

GOP challenger is all business

Roland Straten built the Paterson business his father started from five employees to more than 60 people and $8 million in sales before he retired and turned it over to his son.

Now Straten wants to shrink the federal government so other small businessmen can grow their own companies.

"Small business gets lip service. And then they get taxed, and they get overregulated," said Straten, a Montclair Republican making his second bid to oust seven-term Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. of Paterson.(Jackson, The Record)

Jersey City and Newark among most expensive cities to run a business

New Jersey has never been a bargain for businesses, but a new study ranks two of the state’s cities — Jersey City and Newark — among the 10 most expensive places in the nation to run a company.

http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2010/10/jersey_city_and_newark_among_m.html

The pair joins other such pricey towns as New York, Philadelphia, Chicago and San Francisco, according to the 16th annual Cost of Doing Business Survey by Claremont McKenna College in California.

In nearly all of the top 10 cities, a mid-size retailer must pay more than $10,000 a year just for business license fees, the report said.

The study looked at 413 cities across the nation and examined their licensing fees and property, utilities and sales taxes.

Being expensive isn’t a good distinction, especially during a time when struggling businesses might be thinking about relocating, said Brad Jensen, a researcher at the Rose Institute, which conducted the study.

"States that have low taxes usually have a competitive advantage over other states," Jensen said. "Obviously, there are a lot of factors to consider when moving your business to another state, but in this economy, it could be the thing that tips you over."

The Planning Board said it was going to have the Village Planner introduce ordinances to support the Master Plan Hospital amendment on October 5th.

I notice that the village website does not have the agenda for tomorrow's meeting listed. Is it because they have changed the agenda or they don't want the public to see the hospital listed and show up?

Al Qaeda Suspect Worked at PSE&G Nuclear Plant

"Perhaps the Police should spend a little less time harassing motorist and bit more time getting back to real Police work and an obvious mistake like this would have been avoided?"

Ok folks sorry for the misunderstanding the staffs comment above has nothing to do with the Ridgewood Police Department at all! . The Term "Police" was used in general generic terms. Obviously there is no nuclear power plant in Ridgewood ..yet .

But we do stick by the statement the the "Police" should be more involved in the pursuit of terror suspects where ever they are working and keeping the public safe. After all the "Police" can kick your door down if your 17 year old enjoys a beer with you while watching a football game . The "Police" can also pull you over with almost any excuse on the road and in Municipal court their word goes unchallenged. Obvious drivers get many tickets they deserve ,but using the Police as tax collectors or letting unions decide what is or is not "Police" business is totally unacceptable. If you can pull over a young driver because he or she does not have the right color sticker on his or her car, then you can certainly expect the "Police" to pay some attention when the known Al Quada operative is working at your local nuclear power plant .

As for "over zealous ticketing", lets face it its true in many places and statistically easy to prove.Since I travel a lot and I find if I avoid certain towns I just don't get any tickets at all end of story .So if you feel a town is over zealous the Ridgewood blog suggests you boycott it ,never spend any money there ever . It is a lot easier than you think .I no longer frequent the Jersey Shore for this very reason there are just too many over places to go to the beach , who needs the hassle.

thanks

Al Qaeda Suspect Worked at 5 U.S. Nuclear Plants

Published March 12, 2010 | AP

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/03/12/al-qaeda-suspect-worked-nuclear-plants/

Before he was rounded up in a sweep of suspected Al Qaeda terrorists in Yemen, Sharif Mobley was a laborer at five nuclear plant complexes in Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Authorities are investigating whether he might have had any access to sensitive information that would have been useful to terrorists.

Edwin Lyman, a senior staff scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists, a watchdog of the nuclear power industry, said the case raises questions about security at the nation's nuclear power plants — even though Mobley has not been linked to any wrongdoing at any of them.

Some of the information used to give temporary workers like Mobley clearance comes from other nuclear power companies and is sometimes incomplete, Lyman said.

"The real question is: Was there information that the NRC or utilities could have seen that would have led to his disqualification?" Lyman asked.

Meanwhile, a law enforcement official said Friday that the U.S. government was aware of Mobley's potential extremist ties before Yemeni officials arrested him, but did not provide a time frame or details about what exactly was known about him.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Friday that Mobley worked between 2002 and 2008 for contractors who did work at the Salem and Hope Creek plants in New Jersey; the Peach Bottom, Limerick and Three Mile Island facilities in Pennsylvania; and Calvert Cliffs in Maryland.

Officials at PSEG Nuclear, which runs the complex in New Jersey, say he carried supplies and worked on routine maintenance mostly during periodic refueling outages, when hundreds of contracted employees descend upon the plants.

Readers Report being Cheated by Virgin Mobile Wireless

Virgin Mobile wireless cell phone top-up plans may be attempting to cheat all their customers. They attempted to cheat me twice. The first time a few days ago, I had a small balance in my account. When I added a top-up card the previous balance was not added to my account. I called customer service and the mistake was corrected. The same thing happened last June 2010. I didn't complain at that time. And didn't get the correct balance. Both times the money amount was under $2 but over one $1.50. I wish to alert the public. I have had this phone since 2005. I will not use it again.

It's up to all of us to educate everyone around us about the consequences of bullying

It's up to all of us to educate everyone around us about the consequences of bullying

It's up to all of us to educate everyone around us about the consequences of bullying, including using technology to taunt or to spy on others. I'm so fed up with this absurd "they couldn't know" excuse. Violating another person's privacy is never acceptable. No one can know another person's state of mind; thus, taunting and other attacks can always endanger the target's mental and physical health. Years ago, one of my high school classmates shot herself after years of being taunted by students and teachers about her appearance. It's all too easy to push people over that psychological edge. Evidence has been mounting Ravi was already posting about Tyler's sexual preference as early as Aug. 22. This young man knew exactly what he was doing, as did Molly Wei. I've taught people such as these two, and I have no patience with their cruel behavior. Posting footage of someone engaging in an intimate act goes far beyond a prank; once those images reside on the web, they're essentially there forever. Other students asserted both spread gossip about Tyler around the dorm. For those who think such acts are simply jokes, would you want such intimate footage of your kisses broadcast on the internet? I rather doubt it.

This sort of behavior has been around since the dawn of time, but that does not make it acceptable. Every time we look the other way when someone commits a cruel act, we become part of the problem. We must all promote civil discourse and sensitivity when dealing with our fellow beings. We should not let Tyler's tragic death be in vain.

Does Valley Hospital have Ridgewood under siege ?

Does Valley Hospital have Ridgewood under siege ?

Built around you…

If you were ever in any doubt that the Valley Hospital has Ridgewood under siege then it has been confirmed by Valley’s own advertizing for their off-site Columbia venture. Like a medieval army besieging a city, Valley with its campus on Van Dien Ave and nine satellite campuses is now not physically possible to enter Ridgewood without passing by a Valley property. You cannot educate your children in Ridgewood without the hand of Valley fondling them through Valley’s unprecedented influence on the BOE and HSA. Valley hijacked the last Village Council and the Planning Board agenda for 3 years to approve the 100 percent Valley crafted Master Plan Amendment. Megan Fraser, the Valley PR Executive is now wielding Valley’s influence over the Ridgewood Chamber of Commerce.

The people of Ridgewood need to NOW OPEN their eyes and see what has happened to their Village. Now is the time to conquer the aggressor and take back their town! Make your vote count in November.
